This is what the Dictionary of American Family names has Mercado Name Meaning Spanish: from mercado 'market', topographic name for someone living by a market or metonymic occupational name for a market trader. Source: Dictionary of American Family Names ©2013, Oxford University Press Any name can be Jewish. When surnames were taken in Europe during the last millennium it wasn't necessarily to identify someone as a member of a family but just to better identify him on records. Also understand that the Talmud defines a Jew by the mother, not the father. Orthodox and Conservative Judaism believes as long as you have a Jewish mother you are a Jew whether you were raised Jewsih or if you or not practice the Jewish faith. | Posted: 13 Mar 2016 09:59 AM PDT You wrote the word that sounds like "knee-grow" and YA asterisked it out. User "Box" hasn't done much genealogy. A "pure" mulatto would have one "pure" white parent and one "Pure" black one, and, normally, would have a skin tone about halfway between both; coffee with a lot of cream in it, to quote one famous writer. "Mulatto" was supposed to be a child of one black parent and one white one, but it grew to cover anyone who was of mixed race. And, whether someone is white, black or mulatto on the census was often the enumerator's call. Families switch between white and mulatto, and between black and mulatto, pretty constantly over the years. I have seen cases where the same people get enumerated as black, mulatto and white in successive censuses. The DNA companies say African-Americans average 20 - 28% European blood, depending on which DNA company is giving the estimate. So, chances are your ancestor is mixed. the only way to tell for sure is to keep tracking his family back to 1870, and even then you may never know. |

Yes, many biologist believe the human race goes back to one female they call Mitochondrial Eve in sub Saharan Africa but it is not a proven fact. Once someone presents some scholarly theories in writing people grab hold of it and start stating it as fact. DNA of the bones of ancient Greeks show they were pretty much the same people that are in Greece today, not some Nordic blonds. An ancient writer making the point to describe someone by their blond hair might be because blonds were not all that common. Also that Ashkenazi Jews are not descended from ancient Israel but are Khazarian Turks is a theory not a proven fact. It is very likely that most have ancient Israelites ancestry along with some Khazarian Turk along with a lot of other people. Their is no such thing as a pure race, pure nationality, pure ethnicity. Don't jump on the band wagon of a theory because it is written up in a scholarly publication by someone. Some theories turn out to be true and some just theories only. |
