Question: How can i improve in dance (hip hop) when i dance i look lost, weak and flimsy? Posted: 22 Jul 2016 10:31 PM PDT If you take classes from a qualified teacher you will get better and sharper. Copying foot and arm positions doesn't mean you are doing things correctly. You have to learn to engage the right muscles to get you there. What you do on your own is learn the steps to a specific dance but not how to dance. You need dance technique and that comes from taking classes.
Question: Should I sign my toddler up for tumbling/jazz or ballet/tap? Posted: 22 Jul 2016 03:01 PM PDT At this age it is all play (or it should be) so it doesn't really matter. If it is more than play and they actually attempt to teach dance look elsewhere before your child is injured. When and if your child decides to take things more seriously you start with ballet when they are older. Pre-ballet starts at age 5 and real ballet training starts at age 7/8 when both the mind and body is mature enough to handle turnout without getting injured. Make sure the studio has either a sprung or floating floor. Moving and jumping on a floor with no "give" and you open her up to injuries. Also make sure the teachers are qualified. If the school is good it is easier for her to continue. If not, children tend to not like change and she can be stuck in a bad situation. Do your homework and see where the teachers trained and where they danced. It will save you a lot of future problems caused by unqualified people teaching dance that have no business doing so. Anyone can call themselves a dance teacher with little or poor training. Even though it is a recreational school, the teachers should have had professional dance training as well as training in dance pedagogy and kinesiology.
Question: Should I be doing more dance? Posted: 22 Jul 2016 11:10 AM PDT Performing arts needs acting and singing also. If pure dance then you should be taking far more per week. The problem is that if you are not good enough or not advanced enough you will only ever be heading for very low paid now and again jobs. There are a LOT of good dancers out there to fill the amount of positions available. You have to be amazing to be working all the time.
