| Question: Did the Renaissance ignite the flame to overthrow religious domination? Posted: 25 Jul 2016 11:37 AM PDT From my understanding (correct me if I'm wrong) of the history of Western civilization, it was the Renaissance that ignited the flame to overthrow religious domination. During the Renaissance, you had three man claiming to be the Pope of the Catholic Church. This time in history is referred to as the Western Schism, which caused people to begin to lose trust in the hierarchy of Catholic Church. Also, there were a series of bad popes during the Renaissance that caused a lot of scandal. The most controversial pope was during the Renaissance was Pope Alexander VI, who had many mistresses and illegitimate children. Then there was the selling of indulgences, which caused scandal among many as well. All of the above seemed to have kick started the Protestant Reformation. The Protestant Reformers rejected the authority of the Catholic Church altogether, which essentially made Protestantism become a conglomerate of opinions because everyone had a different interpretation of what the Bible means. So therefore, there was no longer any kind of objective truth or morality. And the Protestant Reformation was the beginning of the modern world. |

| Question: What was music like before the medieval era? Posted: 25 Jul 2016 11:28 AM PDT If you go back before the Middle Ages, you're getting into the times of the Roman Empire. We don't really know much about what music sounded like back then. Modern music notation didn't develop until much, much later. And the whole concept we have today of music as something you just listen to as a thing by itself--if I remember right, it didn't really exist back then. Music was always much more functional. |
| Question: Hello everyone. What made the cold war come to an end? Posted: 25 Jul 2016 10:59 AM PDT The USSR won the Cold War in 1973 when the US pulled all of its troops out of Vietnam. The Democratic Congress and Jimmy Carter disengaged the United States from the Cold War, and for the better part of the next decade the Soviet Union went on rampage in the Third World trying to impose Communism on as many people as possible. In the process they destabilized Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, sub-Saharan Africa, Central Asia, and South and Central America. They tried to neutralize NATO by deploying SS-20 missiles in Western Russia, and finally ended up invading Afghanistan to impose a Soviet puppet government on that nation. In the process they overextended themselves. All of these new nations paying lip-service to the USSR were nothing more than petty dictatorship in it for the Soviet foreign aid. None of them could support themselves, and the USSR found itself having to economically support them. By 1980 the American people had become alarmed, and elected Ronald Reagan to re-engage the US in the Cold War. The Soviets suddenly found themselves being challenged again without the resources to respond. By 1989 their control over their long-time "satellite states" in Eastern Europe stated to unravel, and the whole house of cards collapsed in economic ruin. The period from 1973 to 1992 was the fourth and final phase of the Cold War. It started out looking like the Soviet Union had won, but ended up with their collapse. Source(s): History-buff....
