| Posted: 22 Jan 2016 06:01 PM PST As hard as it is to be a pro athlete - it's harder in a way to be professional actor. There are currently 100,000 professional, union actors just in LA. That's not counting union actors in other parts of the country, non-union actors or wannabe actors like you. There just isn't enough work for everyone. And every job is temporary so you always have to worry about when (and if) you can get another job. Most professional actors don't support themselves by acting alone. So acting really isn't a good "fall back" career. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try acting. Start now with a beginning acting class or two. Audition for community theater. Join drama club and compete is forensic speech/drama contests. There is a huge difference between being a big fan of movies and actually acting in movies. You need to see if you really like the work of acting - auditioning, analyzing a script, building a character, memorizing lines and blocking, taking direction, working with a cast and crew as well as performing. And you have to see if you're any good at it. Start there and see how it goes. If you find you have a passion for the work of acting and you're exceptional at it - then you can research what is really involved in attempting a professional acting career. It's not like there are a bunch of open auditions you can just go to hoping to be discovered. For most professional work you have to be invited to audition usually through an agent. And you can't just hire an agent, it's more like they choose you. Attempting a professional acting career is like running a business and you are the product to be marketed and sold. There's no one way to become an actor and there are a lot of scams and rip offs that prey on people who fall for the myth that actors are just "discovered". By getting some training and experience and researching a bit about the business, you might get a better idea if this is the right career for you. |
