Question: Is it possible to achieve a full center split in two weeks?

Posted: 13 Jul 2014 10:18 AM PDT

It's possible but maybe not for you. If your teacher is rushing you, that's very dangerous. you could hurt yourself. These things take time. It took one of my friends a year to get her center split, while it took another one of my friends no time at all since she was naturally able to do it.

Stretch 2-3 times a day for 10-20 minutes on days where you don't have class. Stretch for 15 minutes before each class. Remember to warm up first. Never stretch while you're cold. You could hurt yourself. Also, when you're cold, your muscles are tense and harder to stretch. When you're warmed up, your muscles are all nice and relaxed. Never, ever push yourself too hard. Just go slightly over comfortable. Stretching should never be extremely painful.

I advise against doing the splits while you are doing your homework or watching TV, because then you are passively stretching. You want to be actively stretching.

Question: What do dancers do after their years as a dancer student are over?

What does the age of 18 have to do with it? You can continue to take class for many years. Meanwhile, pay attention to your academics and work toward a rewarding career that will support you. At the same time you can continue to dance in your spare time, and if there is a community dance company near you, you can perform with them if that is what you want. But many people find just taking class to be fulfilling, both physically and emotionally. Dance classes are never wasted.
