| Question: Her grandmother is my aunt what are we? Posted: 29 Oct 2015 09:48 PM PDT Let's use names from my own family to make it clear. Lella and Clare are sisters. Elizabeth and Samuel are first cousins. Adam is Elizabeth's son, Lella's grandson, Clare's grandnephew, and Samuel's first cousin once removed. Unless the aunt is through marriage (the wife of a parent's brother), then there technically is no relation. |

| Question: What would my son be to my nephews daughter? Posted: 29 Oct 2015 08:15 PM PDT First cousin once removed is correct. Children of siblings are first cousins to each other as they share grandpaents. Children of first cousins are second cousins to each other as they share great grandparents. Children of second cousins are third cousins to each other as they share and so on. The removes come in when you are in a different generation coming down from a common ancestor. You are a first cousin once removed to your first cousins' children as your grandparents are their great grandparents. Thus one generation different. You are also a first cousin once removed to your parents' first cousins as their grandparents are your great grandparents. Again, one generation different. Jagged Farrow has already provided you with a relationship chart. Too many people think their first cousins' children are their second cousins anf that is very incorrect. They share grandparents with their first cousins but those grandparents are their children's great grandparents. |
