| Question: I want to act, but how?!? Posted: 22 Oct 2015 08:36 PM PDT If you want to act (and you're not just enamored with the idea of being "an actor") then go act! - Find a beginning acting class and give it a try. Voice and dance lessons can be fun too. Maybe there's a summer theater camp that would work for you. - Check out the websites of community theaters in your area for upcoming auditions. - Audition for your school show. - Join (or start) a drama club. - Look into competing in forensic speech/drama contests. - Read plays and scripts of all kinds, keeping an eye out for characters you love and monologues you want to develop - and perform them for friends and family. - Check out the website of your local film commission to see what's happening in your area. Or contact the local film school and ask how they find actors for student films and check those sources. (These are a bit of a long shot, bulgur something you could try.) - Get together with friends and make your own shows for fun. Things like that will give you a chance to do what you say you love! You can always have acting and performing as part of your life even if you never pursue a professional career. Since you have no experience - get some through classes and the other things I mentioned. Make sure you really love the work of acting - auditioning, analyzing scripts, building characters, memorizing lines and blocking, rehearsing, taking direction, working with cast and crew, as well as performing. And see if you're any good at it. Make sure the reality of acting matches the ideas you have about acting. The thing is, professional acting is a business. It's not like there are a bunch of open auditions you can show up at and hope to be "discovered". It's more like running a business and you are the product to be marketed and sold. And there are a lot of scams and rip offs out there So if you're still interested in an acting career after taking some classes and auditioning for things - the start looking at colleges with string acting programs while you research and learn how the business works. . You need to understand things like the casting process (casting directors, agents, breakdowns, etc); legal requirements (contracts, unions, taxes, etc); effective marketing strategies (head shots, resumes, show reel, website, social media, etc); networking. So read industry trades and websites like http://www.backstage.com . Read books about the business (Brian O'Neil has a good one.) chat with actual working actors about what is involved in starting and keeping an acting career. Then you can come up with an approach for your career. There's no one way to become an actor. Good luck |
| Question: Can I have a talent agent if in Los Angeles if I love in Phoenix, AZ? Posted: 22 Oct 2015 07:56 PM PDT Not really. Maybe if you were a well established actor you could live outside of LA and have an LA agent. But not if you're just beginning. There are 100,000 professional, union actors just in LA on top of the thousand upon thousands more wannabe, "aspiring" actors. It's not like LA agents need to search the country for more actors. Generally, agents represent actors where they live. They are paid a percentage of what an actor makes. It's not unusual for auditions to be held on short notice. If you can't make those auditions, you can't book jobs and the agent doesn't make money. So it just doesn't make a lot of financial sense to represent an unknown, non-union actor who live outside of LA. Sorry. |
