| Question: How do you describe a 1920's ballroom? Posted: 13 Sep 2015 02:02 PM PDT I'd start by searching out pictures of 1920s parties held in ball rooms, maybe even find some early film footage of them. Plenty of such things on line these days. That way I'd know what such parties actually looked like, rather than basing my fiction off of some Hollywood version of the era. If this were a party in a private home, I'd go on a real estate website and take a look at some pictures. Zillow tells me there are at least six mansions that old currently on sale within an hour of my home, three of them have rooms that would have been considered private ballrooms at that time. I'll regularly use such things when writing stories, because even if I don't describe things, my knowing how the rooms are set up keeps me from ending up with absurd floor plans. Details like paneling or tile work will creep into my story and something like the light coming in through the windows might end up being featured. I might even visit such a space to get a feel for such rooms. Could be a kick BSing a real estate agent about such a purchase and taking a look around the type of house used to have a private ballroom. Looking at real estate has always been a cheap way for broke couples to spend an afternoon. Ultimately, you need to do the work yourself. I realize that your generation has grown up composing your schoolwork largely by cutting and pasting other people's work together, but you can't write stories that way. |

| Posted: 13 Sep 2015 11:24 AM PDT I am an artist (painter/writer/composer) and I find that I love dating both artists and non-artists for different reasons. Obviously with other artists, we have more in common and more to share and talk about. But I feel like they can be too much like me. On the other hand, when I date men who aren't artists, whether it's cooks, construction workers, men who work on the business side of art/music, I find that they tend to be more masculine and therefore, they accentuate my femininity. Which I love! But they usually aren't big on art or don't love it as much as I do. Still they like me as a person and my love for art and their lack of it doesn't seem to bother them. I just wonder what kinds of people other artists tend to date and how it works for them whether they date other artists or people who don't know much about art. |
