| Posted: 19 Sep 2015 06:11 PM PDT Having the crfwon come loose is not in and of itself a problem. t's just when you tighten it, it often makes the internal cork *creep* out of osition. Take the cleaning rod out of the case. Opposite the eyelet where the cleaning cloth is inserted, you will see a MARK (groove) on the other end. Insert that end into the end of the headjoint that fits into the body. That mark should be exactly in the center of the embouchure hole, where you blow. If it is NOT, then your notes will all be out of tuns, and many will be hard to get to play! Show your band director, and THEY will move the cork. This is not as easy as it looks - do NOT try it yourself! Especially in older flutes, that cork dries out and become loose, and TOO easy to move - so the band director might put in a new one, hold a match flame under this one to swell it, or use a special tape to make it fatter. And the screw inside the crown might be worn, too - that is often fixed with a low-tack glue (something that holds, but can be broken free with a twist) or even a dot of nail polish. This is common, and is going to happen to you again in your flute life - just one of the "care and feeding" things one learns when playing an instrument. Enjoy the flute - I certainly have since 1963. Source(s): Professional flutist/teacher/adjudicator in NY since 1973.
