| Question: Help me understand this poem please? Posted: 11 Sep 2015 03:50 PM PDT This poem, a sonnet, by E.E. Cummings, is written mostly in the voice of somebody who is not a very good public speaker, trying to give a patriotic speech (maybe on the 4th of July or some such occasion). But the poem is actually ironic, because the things the speaker is saying are not very complimentary to his country at all. The last line is spoken by a narrator. Although Cummings is often thought of as being a poet who "broke all the rules," blah blah blah, he wrote this poem, which conforms precisely to the metrical, stanzaic, rhyming, and logical patterns of the Petrarchan sonnet form. Cummings wrote dozens of sonnets. |
