| Posted: 17 Nov 2016 10:38 AM PST It certainly isn't one of the more difficult or elite SI programs to get into. However they do screen for body, facility and musicality. Arrive early to warm up and stretch as well as fill out any needed paperwork. No extra dance cloths. Just black leotard and ballet pink tights. No jewelry etc. Hair in a neat tight bun with lots of hair spray or goop. Dance as cleanly as possible. If you do an iffy triple but always nail the double do the double. Proper form over flash. Watch your spacing at the barre, center and across the floor. Nothing looks worse than a dancer who can't space themselves properly and who gets in other dancer's way. No chatting when you step into the dance studio space. Watch your posture as you are auditioning even when it isn't your turn and you are waiting to dance. At the end thank the accompanist and the ballet master/mistress. A smile and a quick "thank you" is all you do. Don't chat them up. This way you will come off more professional. The bottom line is you are either what they are looking for or you are not. As there is nothing you can do about that try to relax and enjoy the audition so your Joy of Dance shines through. |

| Question: Whats the difference between lyrical & modern dance? Posted: 16 Nov 2016 07:53 PM PST Lyrical dance exists only in competition dance and in recital dance studios. It is a literal representation of the music using a combination of ballet and jazz with a little bit of modern thrown in for good measure. it is usually performed in foot undies and tends to be romantic and emotional in approach. There is no "lyrical technique". You use your ballet technique to dance emotionally to the lyrics of a song. Modern dance is a specific discipline. There is Graham, Horton and Limon to name the top 3 styles. There is also Dunham and Cunningham. Later styles like Alvin Ailey came out of Horton and Paul Taylor out of Graham. They are danced barefoot and are grounded as opposed to the floating one wants in ballet. They are all based in rules for their specific style of modern. For example, there is a standard Graham floor at the beginning of any Graham class no matter where it is given and by whom. If you are in a school that has lyrical dance as a class offered the chances of the modern dance being one of the real modern disciplines is not very likely. Often is it more of a modern style with elements that are closer to lyrical and I can see your confusion. The lyrical will be more balletic in any event and the modern most likely more grounded and less etherial. Here is a typical Lyrical class. https://youtu.be/V1RuoG_LqUo This is a typical generic modern dance class that is a mix of styles. https://youtu.be/9eUXX_ya_y4 |
