| Question: Is being smart more important than being kind? Posted: 17 Nov 2016 01:07 AM PST There are two types of abilities in the human heart: ones, that are naturally quite common, like, heart's ability to feel and express fear, nurture desire, sense infatuation, and contain passion etc. and the ones that are not all that common in people, abilities like, kindness, compassion, courage, forgiveness, empathy etc. These abilities are born out of solid moral foundation and vision and then remain fortified, for their further development and growth, by such moral strengths as are necessary for the well being and the proper functioning of a person in society. Kindness in a behaviour is a sure sign of strength, the fact is, kindness IS a strength. The heart of a person with clear and strong moral sense will have such ability as kindness. People with weak character often seriously lack in ability to feel kindness or courage, and so remain either rudimentary or flawed. A mind with weak moral sense and commitment will not provide the human heart the fortification or protection it needs to grow in strength or even to function properly. Is being smart more important than being kind? I say, it is very smart to be able to be kind all the time, but also to be cautious and careful. There is such smart and complex synergistic combination to exist between the human heart and the mind that a person needs nothing to be smart than to see to it, to make sure that everything is functioning properly. |
| Question: Relevance of platos allegory of the cave to the modern society? Posted: 16 Nov 2016 11:24 PM PST I think Plato would explain it this way: 1) in your 21st century society, you have a class that arranges for certain shadows to be thrown in the walls of the cave, and another class that passively observes the shadows and argues about them. 2) the former group, the manipulators of news and entertainment, are clearly in charge within the cave. But in a larger sense the distinction between them does not matter because, 3) Both groups are content with the world of illusion -- nobody shows any interest in understanding the realities beyond the cave. |
