| Question: How am I supposed to write a script about a Thanksgiving Day memory? Posted: 17 Nov 2016 07:46 AM PST So think about a typical family get together for thanksgiving dinner. Imagine everyone is called to dinner, and what they say and do when they gather around the table and take their seats. There would probably be a blessing, even while your cousins are busy elbowing each other and saying things like, "I don't want to sit by (so-and-so)." The adults are politely ignoring the fighting children. Some are gossiping about what so-and-so did and isn't it a shame, and they'll never invite THEM to a holiday dinner. The men are talking about football, or even grumbling about why can't they take their dinner plates in to the family room and watch the game. Your mom, and maybe you, are busy shuttling food platters from the kitchen to the dining room table. Your mom is nagging you about getting this or that (like an extra set of silverware or a serving spoon) while you are busy trying to juggle a very heavy bowl of (potatoes or gravy) to the table without spilling it. You wish it was over already, but you don't dare say anything. Your cousin trips you and then laughs. Your other cousin gives you a haughty look and says something equally snide and arrogant. Like that serving them is all you are good for. After all the sniping, everyone gets settled at the table, and everyone is forced to hold hands around the table. The cousins are busy trying to break the grip of the people on either side. Their mother (or dad) gives them a threatening glare. They look sulky but settle down and are quiet. Your father gives a thanksgiving blessing, and the things he says are totally contradictory to what has been happening moments before. He might say something like, "We thank God for this bountiful food and the kind people who prepared it." You are thinking of how you got it already prepared from the grocery store, so who really prepared it? He continues with, "And bless our wonderful family, who have gone to such great lengths to share this holiday with us. They are greatly welcome and loved." You know they have been fighting, and are not loving at all, since they were committing character assassination of aunt so-and-so just before sitting down, and claimed they would never invite them to their own home for dinner. The blessing done, the chaos starts up again, with the uncles throwing bread rolls to each other, the kids fighting over the mashed potatoes bowl, and your father carving the turkey, offering it to the adults, and when the kids ask for special cuts, he might say, "You can wait your turn. Just sit down and shut up." All this scenario, of course, just proves what a lie the whole grateful-its-thanksgiving-with-family scene really is. You have to write up what each person actually says, and what they are doing, to make it a script.
