| Question: Why was the battle or coral sea and battle of midway important? Posted: 23 Nov 2016 07:30 AM PST Wow. Again, whole books are written on this subject. As brief as I can make this: 1) Battle of Coral Sea was a draw. It was a tactical victory for Japan, but a strategic victory for the USA. Japan's 2 carriers were damaged but not lost. USA lost USS Lexington, while USS Yorktown was heavily damaged. But up until Coral Sea, Japan's carrier fleet had reigned supreme, nearly unopposed, in the Pacific. This was the first battle where Japan was stopped. (They didn't lose the battle, but they didn't win it either.) 2) Battle of Midway, one month later. Huge swing in momentum for the rest of the war. Japan sent 4 carriers against Midway Island and lost all 4. USA sent 3 carriers to defend Midway. They lost 1. Although not known at the time, Midway was the turning point in the Pacific war. Japan never really recovered from the losses of 4 aircraft carriers and, more importantly, all those experienced pilots. Of note: Battle of Coral Sea was the first open sea battle in history where neither sides ships sighted the other's ships. All the combat was done with airplanes. |
