| Question: Is it possible to find someone who doesn't want to be found? Posted: 21 Nov 2016 12:20 PM PST You do not say where in the world this is and that is important as some countries it will be easier to find records or indexes than in another... many countries have 100 yr rule on the majority of records, a few have 70 yr rule. With a women the easiest way to disappear in records is to marry so their name changes.....many countries were at war in 1939..prior to that many people were displaced either within the same country or to other countries. |
| Question: Are there any free sites to look up family trees? Posted: 21 Nov 2016 09:03 AM PST There are many websites but family trees on them are the last thing you should trust. The trees are submitted by the subscribers to the websites and even when you see the absolute same information on the same people from many different subscribers that doesn't mean it is accurate as too many people copy without verifying. No, the websites do not verify what their subscribers submit. It would be far too costly There are websites that have records and family trees. Distinguish the difference. Family trees are not records but some subscriber's submission. The two I feel probably have more records online than all the others put together are FamilySearch.org which is entirely free and Ancestry.Com which many public libraries have a subscripton to you can use for free. Just don't believe Ancestry.Com's ads and promotions. Still distinguish the difference between the records they have and their subscriber submitted family trees which you should personally verify with records/documents before accepting anything in them as accurate. I tend to view any website that only has family trees as a trash website. But before you go to the web you want to start with yourself and work back one generation at a time. Get your birth certificate. It has the names of both of your parents including your mother's maiden name. Maybe your parents and grandparents have theirs. Also death certificates usually have the names of both parents of the deceased including mother's maiden name. See when you do that you are starting with actual documents. There will be a time before states in the U.S started recording births and deaths and then things like church records can be helpful. Find out what living family has. Maybe some have some birth, marriage and death certificates on your ancestors. Maybe they have some baptismal, confirmation, marriage and death records on your ancestors from their churches. Maybe they have some old wills, deeds, family photos, letter from elderly and deceased relatives that will shed a light on your ancestry. Make use of a Family History Center at a Latter Day Saints (Mormon) Church. They have records on people all over the world, not just Mormons. If you find anything in their database you would like to view and print off a copy of an original document, they can order microfilm for you to use there for about $5. I have never had them to try and convert me nor have I heard of them doing that to anyone else that has used their resources. Use the following link to find the nearest Mormon FHC. Find a Family History Center — FamilySearch.org After you have done some of the above you will have a better idea as to what to look for on websites. No way are all records online. You should use the web as a tool only |
