Question: Is Thomas Hobbes still relevant today ?

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 11:25 AM PST

Best Answer:  yes, president Obama just stated recently, that our liberty stops where others liberty begins.
often the Calvin and Hobbes debate is used to justify hobbes opinion that the american people can not be trusted to care for themselves by avoiding their own social disorder, thus they need to be controlled.
for instance, suppose we take all of the police from a neighborhood, and allow the pure spiritual nature of the people decide their social peace. formal policing removed, the community should come to peace, based solely on the level of the spiritual nature of the people within it. this is considered informal policing where the value of life and human dignity is preserved through each individual's spiritual nature. it demands a sense of personal responsibility and a social consciousness of the value of human life.
needless to say, people accepting a social personal responsibility would find that an outside force, formal social policing is needed for those who do not have a philosophy of personal responsibility or the spiritual consciousness to have one.
do you have the right to assume that those in the community do not have a higher spiritual consciousness without the actual test of it.
crime, as an example in a community of 98% christian, people would find that 98% of the crime committed is christian-on-christian crime, and the result would show a low spiritual development. this is hobbes' theory of the need for formal social conformity and policing. government is the organization of social conformity, punishing non-conformity and rewarding conformity.
is the government guilty of a crime, when some people's liberties are restricted and others are extended? no, because the conformity is equal and fair over the broader ground.

There could be many forms of disciplined mind.

One who is unquestionably obedient could be called as such!

Another who weighs options but decides on the 'right' course of action could be another!

What would philosphers say about todays society? philosphers such as Rene Descartes, Marx, Sortre.?

~~~ Being a philosopher capable of thinking for himself, I'll tell you what 'this' philosopher says about today's society;
It is exactly as is should be, absolutely perfect, at this moment!
Just like every moment of Universal existence!
Absolute Perfection!
Reality is absolute Perfection, and this moment is but a single feature of ALL inclusive Reality!
Question: Does self-awareness paves your way?
Does self-awareness pave one's way through life?
I would say yes. If we are not conscious of what we are about, we cannot even have a path, we just flounder about in the rough.
I am often amazed at how the young guys that work for me seem to NOT know why they believe this or that. How they seem to NOT even know how to self-evaluate.
