Question: They handed out parts for the church Christmas play and I got stuck being the wise man's camel AGAIN. This hurts my feelings?

I asked to play Mary or a pretty angel but the pastor said my heft and strong back were a valuable asset in carrying the men playing the wise men from the east down the aisle, especially since this year we got three actual men from the congregation to be the wise men instead of the scrawny teenage boys we usually have. I want to be a good Christian, but I get tired of always being the camel, expecially since there isn't really a costume, they just tell me to dress in khaki and no one will know the difference.

Should I swallow my hurt feelings and be the camel again for the good of the play, or should I dig my feet in and demand to play an angel?

Oh, AND they better not ask me to dress in white to play the whole choir of angels, either.

Question: Should I take acting classes?

While there's no reason why you shouldn't get a lot of enjoyment out of attending a good acting school, I think you should try to be realistic about what it really means to be a professional actor.
Making a difference to people's lives is possible, but unlikely.
Even working in the same production as one of your idols is extremely unlikely to ever happen.

If you imagine that as a professional actor you'd be on a set day and night, living an exciting life, no boring stuff … you're kidding yourself. In an average year, the typical actor will get no more than 2 or 3 weeks' paid acting work – in total. And that would mostly consist of odd days here and there, acting in small productions, at very low rates of pay.

The rest of the time almost all actors have to work at an ordinary job, just to afford to pay their rent and food. They just don't go around telling anyone!

It's also incredibly hard work. There are hundreds of lines to learn, you have to get up at maybe 4am, you might not get to sleep again until midnight. You would probably have to attend a hundred auditions just to win one small role with 1 or 2 words.
Dreams are just that – dreams. Only one or two actors in a million get to win roles in major movies or popular TV shows, or big plays in theatres. The reality is nothing like you imagine.

It's great that you're trying to change yourself - but dyeing your hair blue and getting a tattoo isn't changing the real you - just your appearance. Work on gaining some self-confidence, get a better education, widen your interests, read, make friends, work towards a better job.
If you work hard, I'm sure you can have a great life and be very happy.
But this idea of acting is in your head for the wrong reasons.

Join an acting class, but do it for fun. If it happens to lead you anywhere in the future - great. But don't expect that. It's simply unrealistic.
Just learn to enjoy yourself, have fun, and also learn to love yourself.

Be happy!

Question: How do I prepare for drum major try outs next year?

How do I prepare for drum major try outs next year?

Next year I want to try out to be my schools marching band drum major. I was just wondering if I could have some advise on how to get ready. Maybe some tips on improving my conducting, question examples, and other things to prepare. The competition is big because there are tons of people trying out but I want to try my best! Thanks for all the advise.
