| Question: How could southerners ever think they have a right to own slaves? Posted: 17 Aug 2015 08:42 AM PDT Slavery wasn't some relatively modern invention - it has been practiced all over the world over millennia. Southern slaveowners justified their practice of slavery in several ways (they're all bullshit, of course), but mostly on the basis of white supremacy (by the 1850's, EVERYONE knew that slaves were black). They didn't even attempt to hide this - they were explicit in using white supremacy as their justification for slavery. After all, if you grow up in a viciously racist society, why would you think to hide your racism? |

| Question: What happened to India after it won its independence from Britain in 1947? Posted: 17 Aug 2015 07:03 AM PDT They won their independence, and Gandhi, one of the leaders of the independence movement, didn't ask for any political power afterwards as he knew it'd corrupt him. Then after that, the Indians faced many ethnic and religious problems. There has also been many political issues in India and other issues that they face (there's still tons of poverty, pollution, honor killings/rapes, etc.) I believe there were many debacles among Hindus and Muslims (people predicted there would be problems with India as India was made up of so many different people of various backgrounds). Now India has a population of 1 billion; right after India won its independence, I believe it had a population of 400 million. Many Pakistanis migrated into India too, to find jobs and new homes. That's what I generally know, but there's definitely WAY more to it than that. Hope this helped somewhat, though. |
