| Question: Is there a differnece between the proclamation of 1763 and the proclamation line of 1763? Posted: 15 Aug 2015 08:27 PM PDT The proclamation Line was devised through the Royal Proclamation. n the Treaty of Paris (1763) that ended the Seven Years War, Britain gained all of Canada as well as the territory north of New Orleans, Louisiana, and between the Eastern Great Divide and the Mississippi River. France, which was forced to cede this territory, had also ceded the territory west of the Mississippi, known as Louisiana, to Spain in 1762. In the Royal Proclamation of 1763, portions of these new British territories were divided into Quebec and East and West Florida. Most of the territory between the Appalachians and the Mississippi was reserved for American Indians, and colonists were barred from settling west of the "Proclamation Line" that ran down the peak of the Appalachians. This angered many colonists who had fought in the Seven Years' War in hopes that they could gain new land west of the Appalachians. |

| Question: What were dentists like in the early 20th century 1900-1914? Posted: 15 Aug 2015 06:45 PM PDT Dentistry was in its infancy. A dentist's main job then was pulling bad teeth out of people's mouths, which was needed frequently, because a combination of not brushing or flossing, no flouridation, and poor nutrition caused many people to lose many or all of their teeth. This, of course, led to a secondary business in making and selling dentures and bridgework. Needless to say, all of this hurt a lot. Dental anesthetics existed, but the dosage was frequently not calibrated well, so that it was not unusual for people to die during dental procedures. Some dentists had actually graduated from dental schools, but in some states dentists still didn't have to be licensed, so a good many were practicing with a minimum of training. If you've ever wondered why your grandparents dreaded going to see a dentist, now you know. Here's a photo of a dentist at work in his office in approximately those years. Note that the chair faces the window. This was the usual setup. Few offices had good artificial lighting, so they took advantage of natural daylight from the windows. |
