| Question: Feedback on this Shakespearean sonnet i wrote for AP English? Posted: 26 Aug 2015 10:39 AM PDT "Doormat" is a very interesting and unexpected rhyme for "that." Nicely done! On the other hand, "guess" and "protest" don't rhyme. "Same" and "pain" don't rhyme. It's fine to use near-rhyme in a poem if it's done for a discernible reason, but in this poem, all the other rhyme pairs really do rhyme, so these two pairs seem to be just mistakes. |

Posted: 26 Aug 2015 10:23 AM PDT Your body's killing me (lose the extra syllable to keep iambic rhythm) You hypnotize my mind My eyes they glue on you (add the extra syllable to keep iambic rhythm) I've lost control I find (change it up so that it rhymes and keeps iambic rhythm) Possessed is how I feel Do you see how the rearrangement creates a rhythm? poSESSED is HOW i FEEL It's iambic pentameter. Each line has six syllables with emphasis beginning on the second syllable, then every other syllable thereafter. Also, by rearranging the second line of the stanza, you create an assonant rhyme with the fourth line. You need to continue these metered patterns forward: |
