Take me to the water Please tell me if it's crap. I'm writing it as a first original song for my band and I hope its good enough to perform with. It's not done but the format will just repeat itself (with guitar parts here and there). Thanks! |

| Question: How to become a part of a movie soundtrack orchestra? Posted: 19 Aug 2015 04:02 PM PDT There are thousands upon thousands of VERY fine professional flutists in the US - let alone the world. For the goals you have set yourself, you woudl need to have a BM and probably MM degrees form the finest conservatories into which you can be accepted. These degrees will be in flute performance, and unless they are from the TOP schools - forget it. A weak school gets you nowhere. There are always people who went to East Overshoe State who tell all who will listen, that they LOVED that college, and because it was small and in cow country, they got lots of special attention. Yeah, sure. If it's not a school at the level of Juilliard, Manhattan, Oberlin, etc. - you will not get what you need - so, YES - the name matters, as does the specific private teacher with whom you study. OK - you graduate. Then you begin a LONG slog of auditions until you land an orchestra job - somewhere - probably per-service, part-time. Over the next few DECADES you work your way up until perhaps perhaps you get on a call list to play for some film scores. You DO realize ( because I have answered your questions BEFORE) that you have to wait until someone retires ( seldom) or actually DIES. The first call flutists - like Louise DiTullio - have played for THOUSANDS of movies. There are perhaps ten than have the whole business sewn up - and another dozen or so that are runners-up. That's it. In the WORLD. Same for every other instrument, although string players tend to get hired "by the dozen" - but winds, 2-4 in a section is about it in many scores. So your job is to become the absolute best musician you can - and then see what you can win, or what is offered. what you say you want today, is seldom *exactly* what you end up - which is not really a bad thing - just not what you planned. So good luck - and go practice. Source(s): Professional flutist in NY since 1973 - made most of my flute career (and piano career, too - another story) in chamber music, solo work, studio teacher and music education/school music director, arranging. Worked hard, did well - and am one of MANY that are working successfully - but there are MILLIONS that fail, for a variety of reasons - and talent and education is not always why.
