Arts & Humanities: Philosophy: “Question: What if Buddha turn to be a schizophrenia?” plus 5 more

Question: What if Buddha turn to be a schizophrenia?

Posted: 28 Sep 2016 06:53 AM PDT

He would be in the one-half of one percent of humans who suffer schizophrenic syndrome.

His thought would be insightful, as "wrong desire" is sometimes connected with schizophrenia (not to mention genetic predispostion factors).

His teaching of "not this materialism, not this mortal-mindedness" would be poignant, and logically admissable.

His statement that he taught "anchored in Atman" would resonate with e.g. Sri Ramakrishna and Paramahansa Yogananda, and therefore his words and teaching would be evaluated apart from the man himself. If a Padma Sambhava or a Guru Milarepa attained enlightenment, based on practicing the Dharma as taught by Gautama, then so be it.

Question: Do you think truth is worth the pain?

Posted: 28 Sep 2016 03:25 AM PDT

Yes
Truthfulness means more than merely telling the truth. It is a way of life. It defines who we are. We make the truth known to others not only by what we say but also by what we do. "Do you . . . the one teaching someone else, not teach yourself?" asked the apostle Paul. "You, the one preaching 'Do not steal,' do you steal? You, the one saying 'Do not commit adultery,' do you commit adultery?" (Romans 2:21, 22) If we are to impart truth to others, we must be truthful in all our ways."

Question: What should we share, and what should be hidden?

We are icebergs - showing just enough of ourselves above the waterline and most below. But unlike an iceberg where physics dictates that always 10% is above the water line for all to see and 90% below hidden, people can manage their waterline and change it to the circumstances at hand. Keep it too high and you will drown in isolation. Keep it too low and you will be overwhelmed by vulnerability. The whole point is as we move about our day at work, in public, at home, at school, in the bedroom, at the doctor, with friends, with strangers, in active or passive pursuits, we must manage the waterline - there is no one place to put it and keep it there. And take into account that everyone else is doing so too with some degree of success or failure. We have all encountered the stranger or casual acquaintance replete with TMI on a regular basis. We have all encountered the impenetrable stoic that could not be reached. Do your best to understand those people but don't be those people.

Question: How can a paradisal Eden equally be a living hell?

Posted: 28 Sep 2016 02:22 AM PDT

As in all philosophical questions, you should define your terms. What is Eden? What is Hell? Personally, I find the concept of hell absurd. If God exists, and if He loves us, the idea that He would consign one of His creations to suffer for eternity for a mere 70+ years of existence is ridiculous and completely illogical. As for Eden, I imagine it's supposed to be a place where nothing is lacking and everyone's ecstatic. I think that's ridiculous too. If you can accept those definitions, then my answer is yes, because I think if we had no desires unfulfilled and no motivation to do anything, we would cease to have a reason to live. Our constant desire to improve our lives through effort and invention would be lost, and there would be no reason to live. I would find it a living hell to know that each day would be devoid of any effort or desire to improve my life, to help my brothers and sisters, and to reach that imaginary Eden which, like the end of the rainbow, doesn't exist.

Question: Favorite philosophy?

Life should NOT be a journey to the

grave with the intention of arriving safely

in an attractive and well preserved

body, but rather to skid in sideways

chocolate in one hand, Martini in the

other, body thoroughly used up, totally

worn out, and screaming

"WHOO HOO! What a ride!
