| Question: Acting & Depression... SOMEONE PLEASE HELP? Posted: 27 Sep 2016 09:21 PM PDT I am depressed about where my life is going and need opinions and help sorting things out. I am 14 years old and want to be a big actor. That is all I want in life... just to live my dream! It all started at the end of 2014 when I signed up with a background agency. Everything was well and I got called a lot (like 4 or 5 times a week) and I got picture picked for featured roles (no lines) until recently, in the beginning of last year, I signed up with a commercial agency (The Wayne Agency). So far I have only been to 5 auditions with them, (2 taped, 3 just interview/pictures). At the end of last year, they sent me two pages worth of projects they submitted me for throughout that year and it was weird cause I only got called for 5. I am also with LA Casting and Actor's Access, which my mom submits me for jobs that fit me, but I NEVER GET CALLED FOR AN AUDITION with these two websites. Just so you guys know, I am a total new face, I went to acting school, have professional headshots, a resume, but no credits. This brings a lot of stress into my life. Now, as I am getting older, I realize that jobs are fading as I get older and I am turning 15 this December. I am stressing about my future, how if I don't start now, I will never be able to be a famous actor. Can someone please explain why I don't get called for auditions? I am with all these programs, but I don't get called for auditions weekly like other kids do. Is God giving me bad luck? What should I do? PLEASE HELP! |

| Question: Best acting-film school in Los Angeles? Posted: 27 Sep 2016 02:52 PM PDT What is "best" for one person may not be what is "best" for another person. You should be looking for a program that helps you build your acting skills not some marketing hook. And so that will depend on how you personally approach acting, your learning style, the type of environment you respond to, your current skill level and what you can financially afford. There are helpful articles about what to consider when choosing an acting class - http://www.backstage.com/advice-for-acto... . You should also talk to industry professionals for referrals. Industry websites like http://www.backstage.com/advice-for-acto... list schools and programs with good reputations. But again, you have to consider what is best for you. You should understand that the basics of acting - analyzing a script and building a character - are the same regardless of the medium (stage or screen). A well-trained actor will know how to control their body and voice for the appropriate medium. And with acting being as competitive as it is, only focusing on screen acting will limit your options and opportunities. |
| Posted: 27 Sep 2016 01:31 PM PDT Most of the actors I know have free-lance jobs which they do self-employed, so it leaves them free to take time off for the occasional acting job, rehearsals, auditions, etc. But they all had the sense to get trained for these before going to drama school! They have such jobs as eBay traders, aromatherapists, proof-readers, children's entertainers, photographers, copy-editors, writers, website designers, hairdressers, chiropodists, drama teachers, singing teachers, cartographers, jewellery-makers, ceramics workers, researchers, kids' tutors, dance instructors, transcribers, personal trainers, etc. |
| Question: How hard is it to be on Broadway? Posted: 27 Sep 2016 09:41 AM PDT Extremely challenging. Many actors get on Broadway by being involved in a production that was successful off-Broadway and then moved to Broadway. A lot of main roles in major theater are cast through agents and private auditions. But the Union (Actors Equity Association for Broadway) Competition is stiff - there are a lot of talented actors who want to be on Broadway. If you are cast in a show - there is a very rigorous rehearsal and performance schedule. You perform eight shows a week and Monday nights are your only night off. (That's how it is for most professional shows, not just Broadway). This websites has a 9-part series about children on Broadway - the necessary training, auditions, and the like.
