Arts & Humanities: Dancing: “Question: What are my chances of getting into Juilliard Dance?” plus 5 more

Question: What are my chances of getting into Juilliard Dance?

Getting into Juilliard is a crap shoot for some of the most talented and elite trained dancers. They only take 12 girls and 12 boys into the freshman class. That means you need to be one of the 12 of your gender to get in of the many thousands who apply and many more girls apply than boys. On top of that they also "cast" so if you are a certain "type" and too many elite dancers of that same type apply only one gets in. There are dancers trained full time at The School of American Ballet who don't get in or who are wait listed. Many famous and brilliant dancers didn't get in due to so few spots. That being said, Juilliard might not even be the right fit for you. As you have great academics grades, perhaps NYU Tisch ( which was set up by Larry Rhodes current head of Juilliard dance) might be a better fit as you would get great academics along with great training. Juilliard is not known for having great academics. The Alvin Ailey program is also excellent. The use Fordham university for their academic program. These schools are also hard to get into but you should know there are other options and perhaps a better fit for you than Juilliard. I'm not saying don't try for Juilliard. I am saying that it isn't a slam dunk for anyone who applies as you need luck as well to get in.
My daughter chose NYU Tisch as an"Eary Decision" entry. Juilliard was also on her list but Tisch was her first choice due to the top academics they offered along with a great dance origram. Many think Juilliard is the only top school because that is the only one they heard about and see often portrayed in films. That portrayal is often wrong and misleading showing people getting in with hip hop (never happens) or showing it as a ballet focus not concert contemporary focus school.

Just keep your options open. There are many great schools out there. Perhaps audition for the Juilliard Summer Intensive.. While they take many more students in the summer (all high school aged) they are more ballet focused than their college conservatory program. Keep in mind getting in the summer program does not mean you have a better shot at the college program as they are not all that related to each other.

FYI: to my knowledge there has only been one "real" Juilliard dance grad on this site several years ago and they are currently dancing in NDT.

Also I wanted to mention for serious training you don't count any training before age 7 when real ballet training begins. What you did at age 3 was playing ballet not real training. Even at age 5 it is only "pre-ballet." Keep that in mind when filling out applications for SI programs as well as college conservatory programs. That way you come off as a more serious dancer.
