| Question: In Middle Ages, people only drank wine (no water)? Posted: 28 Sep 2016 06:55 AM PDT Not wine. Far too expensive for the majority of the population. The most common drink was beer. It was safe, having been made from boiled water, barley and hops. Hardly anyone in cities drank water but it was quite common in the countryside and the mountains, where fresh rainwater and spring-water could be obtained easily. During major epidemics of cholera and other enteric diseases, it was noticed that men who worked in breweries hardly ever got a disease. And their families seemed healthier when they drank the beer that their men brought home as part of their "truck payments." Conversely, monks and nuns died in disproportionate numbers from these enteric diseases because they believed in drinking "God's wholesome water in rivers and streams." Of course, it was polluted with animal urine, dung as well as human effluent from upstream. |
