| Question: Who invented the Christmas holiday in history? Posted: 16 Sep 2016 07:33 AM PDT The winter solstice has been celebrated as far back as records go. It hasn't always been a holiday. The rich and powerful could have holidays but it is only comparatively recently in the human story that ordinary people have had much in the way of holidays. Pagans had celebrations around the winter solstice and the Romans had their own celebrations at the same time. The Christian church, in order to try to break the hold of other beliefs, hi-jacked existing holidays for its major events so we celebrate Christmas at the winter solstice even though we know from biblical evidence that Jesus could not have been born at the time of the winter solstice. |
