| Question: Why don't my friends accept that violin is harder than guitar? Posted: 23 Sep 2016 12:17 AM PDT I have to say that I am VERY impressed that you could learn to play "all the major and minor chords on guitar" in just four weeks. Most people need several months experience to be able to play barre chords at all. Surely you must have already spent some time learning the basics of guitar first though? In princple, I agree that violin (and piano) are harder to learn to play than guitar. In practice though, it depends on the level the person takes it to. Many instruments, including guitar, are easy to play simply (aka badly) but there are players that play at a level most people, whatever their instrument, can only dream of. To answer your main question though, people, especially very young people, know very little and see great merit is something they happen to like. They have no regard for something they don't appreciate. In other words they don't know any better. |

| Question: Are piccolo players valued in band? Posted: 21 Sep 2016 09:14 PM PDT If you play WELL- and that means, also have a good piccolo - then you have a function just like everyone else. You are no more important than somebody playing third clarinet - just louder and more obvious. Principal chairs in all instruments are filled with people with excellent skills, who are not afraid of the work to keep in fine shape, and also who will not crack under any pressure. However - SCHOOL band directors will need to have a part covered, and often will hand a terrible metal piccolo to whoever they think they can get to play the parts. It is almost never the first flutist that plays picc, even professionally - the picc part is covered by either specialist, or someone who sits a few seats down in the flute section. If you do NOT have a fine teacher, then you need one - the piccolo is NOT just acute little flute- it is hot chili pepper with a yappy-dog attitude. You need to know FAR more alternate fingerings, because the picc is a nasty little beast; you need to have really really fine embouchure skills ( and it is NOT the same embouchure as flute - higher placement, different aperture size, different angle or air, etc. This is often a high-stress/low appreciation spot - unless you have the education and experience to make yourself a specialist at this. If all you are going to do is play high/loud stuff while marching - have at it. Then you will have to RECOVER your decent flute playing when the marching season is over.
