| Question: How does a Nikon 85mm 1.8g act on a D5100? Posted: 23 Sep 2016 10:48 AM PDT Lenses do NOT "act" and they are inanimate objects so love probably is not a factor. A prime lens like a Nikkor 85 mm lens provides an angle of view associated with portrait photography (28°30' when mounted on a full frame camera). Mounting it on your DX camera, the angle of view will be narrower. This is why many people use the 50 mm lens on a DX camera (31°30' -- close to the 85 mm on an FX camera body) so they do not have to photograph people from across the room to get more than a head and shoulder shot of their subjects. Both lenses are suitable for portrait photography. I typically use a 24-70 mm f/2.8 at 70 mm when shooting portraits using an FX camera or at about 55 mm using a DX camera body. Here is a link you can visit to see exactly what the 85 mm lens will :"see" when mounted on your D5100, DX camera |

| Posted: 23 Sep 2016 09:05 AM PDT Anonymous has said it all. When traveling for pleasure, I carry one "big boy" camera with two lenses, a 14-24 mm f/2.8 for the landscapes, city scapes and other architecture and a 24-70 mm f/2.8 for shooting the rest of the subjects I find on my travels. I do NOT find it an inconvenience at all and of course, I just never know when one of my images may end up being a 24 x 36 inch print for my wall, so a full frame digital SLR and shooting RAW is an important aspect of my travels. For those times when carrying a backpack is not practical on excursions once I reach my destination , I use a Nikon Coolpix AW120. It has an acceptable 5x optical zoom, WiFi, GPS and is waterproof down to 10 m. It also happens to be dust/sand proof, drop proof and freeze proof. I bought it refurbished from the Nikon website and it is the perfect "pocket" camera |
