Question: Why do white people deny that they are European? They don't call themselves European, only white?

There was a time when some white people in the United States tried to call themselves "European-American" in response to others wanting to be called "Asian-American" or "African-American." But liberals and other Politically Correct types accused them of racism for doing that, and it really wasn't that big a deal anyway, so they gave up on it. I'm not being sarcastic either; that's really what happened. For whatever reason, Caucasian people in North America just don't seem to get hung up on calling themselves anything in particular, and consequently haven't gone out of their way to really establish some sort of unifying ethnic label.

By the way, the white people I know who are from Europe tend to refer to themselves not as "Europeans" either, but instead by their nationalities.

Question: PLEASE help me identify this Italian ancestors name?
