| Posted: 17 Aug 2016 05:40 PM PDT You're looking for someone...and don't even know their name...all you know is he supposedly lives in one of the largest cities in the US. Well, that narrows things down to a few million people. I'm sure it won't take you any time at all to call each person in the phone book and ask if he's your father or not. |

| Question: How do I find out my ancestry? Posted: 17 Aug 2016 12:13 PM PDT No DNA test will tell you who your specific ancestors are. To find your ancestry you start with yourself and work back one generation at a time, documenting everything as you do. You have your birth certificate? It has the names of both of your parents including your mother's maiden name. How about your parents and grandparents? Do they have theirs? Also death certificates usually have the names of both parents of the deceased including mother's maiden name. It family members don't have them you can order them from the state's vital statistics for a nominal fee. Talk to living family and find out what all they might have. Maybe some have some birth, marriage and death certificates on your ancestors. Maybe they have some old family bibles, old family photos, wills, deeds. Depending on the religious faith of your ancestors, baptismal, confirmation, marriage and death records from their churches usually can be just as helpful if not more so than civil records. Maybe family members have certificates on your ancestors from their churches. Go to a Family History Center at a Latter Day Saints (Mormon) Church. They have records on people all over the world, not just Mormons. If you find anything in their database you would like to view and print off a copy of an original document, they can order microfilm for you to view there for about $5. I have never had them to try and convert me nor have I heard of them doing that to anyone else that has used their resources. A lot of their volunteers are not Mormon. Just use the following link to find the nearest Mormon FHC. https://familysearch.org/locations/cente... After you have done some preliminary work, then use the web as a tool only. Never, never, never trust what you see in subscriber submitted family trees as fact until you have verified with actual records. Even when you see the absolute same information on the same people from a ton of other subscribers, that doesn't mean it is accurate as too many people copy without verifying. No, the websites do not hire people to verify what their subscribers submit. It would be far too costly. Two websites I like for the amount of records they have online are FamilySearch.org which is entirely free and Ancestry.Com which many public libraries have a subscription to you can use for free. Just distinguish between the records they have and their subscriber submitted family trees which should be verified with records. I view any website has only has family trees a trash website. |
