| Question: Classical music buffs, help me with a piece of trivia!? Posted: 13 Aug 2016 08:18 AM PDT There weren't any "concerts" in "antiquity." There was music, but the concept of a "concert" is much more recent than that. You're probably thinking of something that happened in the modern era, long after the end of "antiquity." In 1913 the premiere performance of "The Rite of Spring," with music by Stravinsky and choreography by Nijinski, was greeted with some relatively violent behavior from some audience members who didn't like it, but no one was killed and as far as I know no one was even injured. Some people were ejected from the auditorium in the middle of the performance. |

| Question: How do we know what really went on in, say, the 12th century? Posted: 13 Aug 2016 06:26 AM PDT Historians can read written documents and look at material artifacts (from whole buildings to small decorative beads and everything in between), but that's only the start. Documents may be unreliable, so historians have to learn how to figure out what biases a particular type of document might have -- beginning with the fact that in a mostly illiterate society, only the privileged classes knew how to read and write documents. Historians also know how to compare and corroborate different sources of information to help determine what parts are reliable, and what parts aren't, and how to extrapolate from differences in sources or absence of sources. Historians study for years in graduate school to learn how to do this kind of thing. Also, scholars in fields other than history can find out a lot of important stuff about the past. Linguists studying the changes in language over centuries (like how Latin turned into modern Spanish) can produce information about the migrations of ethnic groups. |
