Question: Can you guys give me feedback on my poem? Posted: 17 Aug 2016 01:55 PM PDT It's called "Help the Future, You Can't Change the Past." First of all, is the title too long? Okay, heres my poem. Once upon a time, a gorilla was shot People hate on and no longer visit the zoo We wont help the lives that are not yet lost Help the future, you can't change the past Thanks in advance. Not saying you have to agree with my opinion throughout the poem, I would just like some constructive criticism :)
Question: Who chooses the poet laureate? Posted: 17 Aug 2016 11:24 AM PDT In the UK, the government's Department of Culture, Media, and Sport solicits suggestions from eminent writers, and then makes a choice, which, when approved by the Prime Minister, is confirmed officially by the Queen. Other jurisdictions have different procedures, but many of them are similar -- a committee of some kind advises some government agency responsible for arts or education, and the choice is then confirmed by some high level official.
Question: What do you think of this poem? Advice? Posted: 17 Aug 2016 09:17 AM PDT If the phoenix cannot fly, how will it blaze through the sky and land on the temple? Maybe it's falling. I don't know. But even if it is, the question remains: How'd it get in the sky too fall if it can't fly? You have a problem with this poem making sense in that it doesn't. Structurally, there are some problems as well. Your first line is trochaic, which is good. It's a strong start. You don't repeat it, however. Instead, your second line wanders into iambic, but then it stumbles by putting two emphasized syllables together with "light shall." From there, though you adhere to a structure of seven syllables per line, your meter becomes increasingly erratic and the poem loses all sense of rhythm. Your rhyme scheme is AABB. That's fine. Some of your rhymes are slant rhymes. That's fine, too. I'm not a fan of "temple" and "feeble," but I'm not not a fan either. Where I took more issue was with your rhyming in the third stanza. These are your last words. You want it to be clean. You give us a weak assonant rhyme in the first two lines, which is bad enough since this is your conclusion, but you don't even do that in the last two lines. All that the words "together" and "savior" have in common are ending in "er." That doesn't make them rhyme. These are the words that you are leaving people with. They should surge and echo in their ears. Instead, they peter out in a wimper without rhyme and in complete syncope.

Question: Please tell if this revision makes sense or needs more work? Posted: 16 Aug 2016 09:22 PM PDT Oh, soul of mine, find your way back to me. Have they been forgotten - our days spent by the sea? So long, now gone forever - endlessly? Or do you pine, despite lost time, for peace and harmony? Without you, I am lost.
