question. Let me say from the outset that I have no idea... but I did some web-based research out of curiosity, and didn't come up with much.<br/>It seems to be one of those traditions that is so old, that no-one really has any clue when it began, and how. My search only brought up more questions... there is certainly a long-established eastern tradition of bowing, and also a western tradition of bowing... but did they originate from the same point, or did two entirely different broad cultural groups on the planet come up with more or less the same idea?<br/>I have no idea, and I'd really like to know more about it... this is a question to ask a highly qualified specialist in the field of Asian history.<br/>Wish I could offer something more useful, other than to say that bowing is a tradition across both Europe and Asia that is thousands of years old... it's like trying to figure out exactly when written language began.
