| Question: Is this a possible Native American owned slave family? Posted: 11 Apr 2015 01:00 PM PDT I've taken an interest in Native American {especially Saponi] genealogy and some of my cousins have possible ancestors owned by them. One of them has actually has confirmed Saponi ancestry. The rest of us might have ancestors owned by them- I don't think we're directly descended from them. There's one person in our family tree named Pleasant Johnson b. 1820 in Tennessee. He has two children- one was born in 1859 Tennessee, and one born in 1866 in Kentucky. Which means that post-emancipation, Pleasant moved away from his Tennessee slaveowner {he was probably enslaved}, migrated to Kentucky and then further on to Ohio- where we are today. Is it possible this man and his family was owned by a Saponi or another Native American slaveholder? What sites would anyone recommend for finding information on this subject? |

| Question: What is the origin of this last name? Posted: 11 Apr 2015 10:33 AM PDT With that exact spelling, https://familysearch.org/search/ (Free) has only 2,232 records for it. By comparison they have over 150,000 for "Pack", which I know from personal experience is uncommon, and over 28,000,000 for "Smith". So, it is incredibly rare or you mis-typed it. Here are the only collections they have in the BMD category with over 50 records, ranked by records England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 160 results Based on this, it looks like it originated in the UK, and a lot of them came to the USA. Please don't forget to choose a best answer. It doesn't have to be mine. 10 points aren't much, but they tell us you read the answers and we didn't flush 8 minutes of research and/or typing down the toilet. |
