| Question: Where to start with fingerstyle guitar? Posted: 07 Apr 2015 05:29 PM PDT Lessons would absolutely be the best thing, but if you can't go that route, I would recommend you get the book "Fingerstyle Guitar" by Ken Perlman. It's a great resource to learn fingerstyle guitar. He assumes you already have a basic knowledge of guitar chords, starts you off with some basic pattern picking and then moves into more melodic fingerpicking. His instruction is careful and step by step, all the music is written out in both tab and standard notation, and by the end of the book, if you study and practice carefully, you'll be playing Scott Joplin piano rags on guitar. Highly recommended. RachelS165 · 3 hours ago

| Question: Where is the best place to see a live orchestra for the first time? Posted: 07 Apr 2015 04:44 PM PDT You want to see a top notch orchestra in a top venue. A surprising number of orchestra venues have bad acoustics. Those outdoor band shells in particular, although being outside on a summer's night is nice. I suggest Cleveland. A world class orchestra at bargain price in a newly remodeled concert hall. |
| Question: I need a violin solo piece for my audition? Posted: 07 Apr 2015 03:48 PM PDT That's really pushing it, time wise. In fact, it is downright frightening to have so little time to prepare. Usually, there are more rules associated with auditions than just a solo piece. Often, there is a time limit and maybe something about contrasting styles (in which case you need to prepare two pieces or two movements of the same piece). There is also often a scale requirement and sometimes sight reading. You might need to talk to the director and anyone else who attends the audition about your prior experience, and your teacher can talk through that with you to make sure it is fresh in your mind and perhaps even provide you with a mock audition so you know what to expect. Sometimes, you will be asked to play first, get cut off before you finish playing what you have prepared (which can put you off balance), then be asked a few interview questions. You have to prepare for all of that, and you have to take that into account with your practice time. Your competition for this audition has probably been preparing for a lot more than a few weeks. Some of them have probably been preparing for a year, and all of those who will make it into the orchestra have been practicing for a few months, at the very least. If you were my student, I would insist that you use a solo you have already prepared for a recital or something (which is apparently not relevant here) or else that you wait and audition next year. Regardless of anything you tell us about what you can do, and even if you provided an example of your playing, there is no way of knowing from that how efficiently you practice and what you can actually prepare in a few weeks. You really need to work with your teacher on this, and you need to prepare yourself for not doing so great on this audition. It is a good learning experience to go through the audition process itself, even if you have no chance of making it. But if you expect to get in, you need to give yourself more time and work with a teacher who can give you feedback as you prepare.
