| Question: Cello tuning with snark tuner? Posted: 09 Apr 2015 06:43 PM PDT Did your teacher recommend getting a Snark tuner? A lot of teachers don't like students to use tuners because they pair some ear training with instruction in tuning, and they want to teach you to tune rather than you trying to figure it out on your own. If you use a tuner when your teacher intended to show you a different way, you are robbing yourself of that instruction. I don't like using chromatic tuners with violin-family instruments. The way they resonate and their tuning in perfect fifths is designed to cause a vibration throughout the entire instrument in such a way that the tuner can actually measure overtones and sympathetic vibration. An overtone is an additional vibration that accompanies a fundamental tone (the frequency you actually hear) at its natural harmonics. A sympathetic vibration is the vibration of a neighboring string because the pitch you are playing is harmonically equivalent to that string. So when you play a given string, there are all sorts of other frequencies coming out of your cello, and even though you can't hear them, the chromatic tuner can register them. Generally, it will register the fundamental tone more frequently, but trying to figure out what you are seeing most often as the screen changes rapidly can be frustrating. Sometimes they work better if you hold them really close to the sound hole rather than attaching it to the scroll, since that puts them closer to the source of the sound, and I have had better luck with apps on smart phones than with tuners designed to attach the instrument. The apps don't seem to be as sensitive, and in this case that is actually a good thing. The only time I use tuners is when I am sick and have fluid in my ears as a result, or before a recital when I have helpers tuning students' instruments and want to error on the side of caution rather than assuming that all of us have perfect pitch. Otherwise, I trust my ears and their nearly three decades of experience over such temperamental technology.
