Question: I wrote a poem for school, is it any good? Posted: 10 Apr 2015 03:59 PM PDT This is the first time I've ever written my own poem and I'm only 15, so I know its not that great. But some (positive) feedback would help. The assignment was to write an extended metaphor comparing an object to your life or an emotion. I have very bad anxiety, so I wrote my metaphor comparing my anxiety to a row boat. I also need a title for it, so if you have any suggestions that would be great! Here it is: "When a storm comes along it can be hard to control your row boat. Water will splash in, lightning will crash. And the stress of possibly going under will haunt you. From rowing for miles and miles your hands will become blistered and your arms will go numb. You'll be desperate to take a break but you know you can't. You continue paddling with the fear that one day you'll no longer be able to. If you make a single mistake everything will be ruined. Take the wrong path and a sharp rock could scrape the bottom of the boat and sink you. And then there is the fear that maybe you'll row too far and become stranded. You'll be alone without the comfort and guidance of another person."
Question: What is the structure of the poem: when i heard the learn'd astronomer ? Posted: 10 Apr 2015 03:42 PM PDT Here are a coupleof things that might give you some ideas. 1. Look at the words that begin each line. "When", "When," When".... this repetition sounds like the dull facts the scientist is reciting. But then later in the poem the line-beginning words change. What does this convey to you? 2. This is a free-verse poem with really long lines, but note that line 1 is almost perfect iambic pentameter, and the last line is iambic pentameter. Does this suggest something about the state of mind of the guy in the audience, how he comes in calm, gets all agitated, and then calms down again as he goes out and looks at nature? Whitman knew a hell of a lot more about formal poetry and how to use its tricks than most people give him credit for.
Question: What is the difference between a poem and a short story's structure? Posted: 10 Apr 2015 03:25 PM PDT STRUCTURE- as in how the text's meaning develop. How would the structure of this short story: The expert by Enrico Diego>>> It is about a girl who is exploring the woods with her cousin. As the story progresses her arrogant cousin realizes that she is smarter than him He was underestimating her because she is smaller. Contrast with this poem:When I heard the Learn'd Astronomer

Question: What do you think of my poem? Posted: 10 Apr 2015 10:32 AM PDT Hello, I've been working on this poem. I really like it, but I want opinions and suggestions. It's an anti self-harm poem. I've been through in the past. I know what depression is like, and once you go through depression it doesn't just go away. It sticks with you forvever.. You can move on and be happy, but the depression is still there. Survival: ( I named it 'Survival'. I think It's a great title. :D) All the secrets and scars you must hide, You cannot deny, A fake smile to hide your misery and pain, The razor won't save you, The scars on your body, Don't let the bring you down, Although you've recovered, it's became apart of you
