| Question: Switching to bass after playing guitar for two years? Posted: 02 Apr 2015 10:36 PM PDT Leave this question up for a couple of days and wait for it. Baxterville, Russell E, or another poster will hand you chapter & verse on this. You won't have an "effort" (hard/easy) issue, assuming you have decent gear, but could get messed up not letting go of playing guitar, an attitude. Instead - embrace becoming a bottom-rhythm and bottom-punch player, where you really need to be, working with the drummer like a soul machine. As others may note, some guitarists make some of the worst bass players, as they're still trying to "riff" the thing. Having made some money in a couple of "trio" bands as a guitar player, I have huge respect for good bassists. As a long-time music lover, I also have great respect for guys like Donald "Duck" Dunn, Jack Bruce, Tommy Shannon, etc. There have been so many, all worth soaking up to get your head right. For "added value", when you get in your groove, work on your vocals. Maybe easier when you're laying it down and not getting pulled around with complex guitar stuff. Sure, if you like, take the guitar to a good music shop for an opinion on its "set-up", as that could be an issue (for say one that cost less than $200 new). Meanwhile, new players use muscles very inefficiently, often using lots more force than needed for fretting/chording, but it all works out (particularly with some good coaching or lessons). You don't need to squeeze it to death on the back, just fret it clean on the front. The puzzle for me is "higher angle". Not knowing what you mean, I'll just suggest placing the guitar back over your "belly button" and relax. And good on standing up. |
