Question: How to do a watercolor wash with other objects already in the middle of the paper?

I'm using mix media paper for acrylic, colored pencil, and watercolor. I used black acrylic paint for a silhouette of a figure in the middle of the paper, and I drew and colored five objects in the center of the paper above him. I wanted to do a plain, pale red watercolor background but I am not a pro at watercolor and don't want the watery paint to bleed into my detailed drawings. The largest brush I have is a 3/4.

Do you suggest painting horizontal strokes? I don't want to achieve that streaky look with half-dry, half-wet watercolor.

Question: Clarity on contrast colors vs complementary colors?

I am learning about color theory and am confused by "contrasting" colors and "complementary" colors.

Definitions use the word "opposites" for both types, but when referring to contrasting colors say the colors "clash", but for complentary colors say the colors "go together" HUH?

Are both definitions referring to the color wheel, or just the complementary definition? How can both refer to opposite colors but one says the colors go well together and the other says the colors are supposed to clash?

Question: Does Sotheby's sell art of individual artists or only of secondary market?
