| Question: Genealogy naming question. (how to describe one's relation to one of his family members)? Posted: 08 Nov 2015 05:35 PM PST Generation 1: Noah's mother's GF & Stacy = Siblings Generation 2: Noah's mother's parent & Stacy's child = 1st cousins Generation 3: Noah's mother & Stacy's granddaughter, Fae = 2nd cousins Generation 4: Noah & Fae's children = 3rd cousins I threw Fae's children in as a bonus. Noah and Fae are one generation apart. That makes them second cousins once removed through Noah's mother. "Removed" means "generations apart". |

| Question: How does ancestry.com work if you have an adopted name? Posted: 08 Nov 2015 10:13 AM PST You had/have four grandparents. You could, if you wanted to take up the sport, work on the other three. It sounds like your great grandfather Kinmith is going to be a dead end. I just looked. Familysearch.org has just 5 records for that surname, and ancestry.com has just 13. Those are incredibly small numbers; familysearch has over 28,000,000 records for "Smith", by comparison. If the aunt who adopted him was his mother's sister, you'd see what you could do on her lines, since the aunt and the mom had the same parents. That gives you 7 out of 8 great grandparents, and Mr. Kinmith is still what we call a dead end. DNA testing starts at $100, but will just paint a broad picture; you are 47% British, 53% Northern European, for instance. It doesn't tell you who your 4th great grandfather was. I won't argue theology, but you can ask yourself how effective it would be to baptize someone who had died, which means, unless they can speak to the dead, without their consent or knowledge - and without their attending the ceremony. Many of us keep our data in purpose-built database programs, like Roots Magic, Legacy or Family Tree Maker, and use Ancestry.com solely for the records. Most of us who have been at it a while and have some critical reasoning ability (not much - can you see a problem if someone dies in 1886 and appears on the census in 1900?) treat the ancestry family trees as sources of amusement and clues, not as facts. |
