Its full name was emotive hardcore punk and it consisted of shouting lyrics, fast guitar riffs but with emotional lyrics (usually about someone's life, what's going on in the world).<br/>The first emo bands were Rites of Spring and Embrace.<p>Eventually the second wave of emo hit Washington but this time it had become more melodic in sound, some bands were Sunny Day Real Estate and Texas is the Reason. These bands were more "emo" if that makes sense, rather than hardcore. It was mixed with indie rock and had more whiney vocals. SDRE used to be my favourite band.</p><p>Punks generally used "emo" as an insult to people who listened to this type of music. The stereotype of emos crying all the time came from the people who went to these gigs because they'd often cry at the emotional music.</p><p>In the 2000s, a band called Jimmy Eat World broke the mainstream with "The Middle" and the emo trend was born. "Emo" kids listened to bands after that such as My Chemical Romance, Paramore, Fall Out Boy, Hawthorne Heights etc. These bands are called emo-pop but you might be able to find some inspirations from original emo in the first albums of these bands.</p><p>The emo trend is heavily stereotyped with labels like "depressed", "suicidal", "self harmer" and "people who wear black clothing". The teenagers who label themselves emo generally know nothing about emotive hardcore and label themselves emo because of a few reasons like they already self harmed so they think it's got something to do with that, because they like black or "emo" clothes like skinny jeans and converse, they like bands that are labelled emo by the media.</p><p>Goth, on the other hand is a subculture that consists of music, aesthetic and fashion. I won't go on about that since you only asked what emo means.</p><p>P.S if you're going to label yourself emo you need to understand what it's about but I guess that's why you asked this question. There's no good in labelling yourself emo if you don't associate yourself with emocore bands or the background and history.
