| Posted: 24 Nov 2015 06:40 AM PST Find a good secondary source (biographies of Cleopatra and Antony; histories of Rome and Egypt of that era; etc.), and see what primary sources those authors used, by looking at their footnotes and bibliographies. Use those, at least for starters. Those may or may not be "reliable," depending on your definition of "reliable." The modern-day historian who used them to write the secondary source is, of course, aware of that, so you need to pay attention to HOW that historian used each of those sources -- the historian may explain in the text whether he/she considers those sources "reliable" or not, and in what way, and why. That's one of the biggest parts of a historian's job: figuring out what we can or can't trust in a source, and what we can learn even from the parts that we don't regard as "reliable." |
