| Question: Role of the concert master? Posted: 21 Nov 2015 06:26 PM PST Know the music backwards and forwards. You'll be leading the entire string section, so you must know your part well enough to get every note, entrance and rhythm right. Listen to recordings of the music you're doing with the violin part in front of you so you know exactly where any tempo changes happen, where any difficult entrances are, and how the parts fit together. Keep an eye on the conductor. Any entrances and the beginnings of any notes that are difficult to place precisely need to be conveyed to your section through moving your violin with the beat, making exaggerated motions for pizzicato, and visibly lifting your bow to indicate where to end a note. You may be required to work out bowings in consultation with the other section leaders. Depending on the skill level of the orchestra, the conductor may expect less in terms of leadership from you, but those are the general duties of the concertmaster. |

| Question: What type of degree should I pursue? Posted: 21 Nov 2015 01:29 PM PST Unless you've already nailed high performance honors at the local and state level, you're not getting ready for much of anything except massive disappointment in a few years. Doesn't matter if you love it, or that your friends or family think you're great. Maybe you are! Question is then if you're willing to risk the money & years, which you can't get back, on that. Far better to go for education that will put money in your hand, a roof over your head, and food on the table, while pursuing your performing art as a "minor" in college, or a sideline. I am NOT trying to kill your dream, but rather actually handing you the way to survive and keep it alive, which I hope you do. |
