| Question: How should I audition? Posted: 11 Nov 2015 06:17 PM PST There's no secret or special trick to getting cast - sorry. And the fact is a lot more goes into casting a show besides the audition. A director has to consider everything from schedules that might conflict with rehersals to who look "right" and has "chemistry" with the other actors being cast, who is dependendable and will respond well to direction, and many other things. Auditions are not like a contest or sports tournament where the best wins the lead or something like that. Think of an audition more like a mini performance - a chance to show people what you can do. So basically all you can do is prepare for the audition by reading the play, understand the character of Nancy (what motivates her and things like that). If the audition involves a monologue, pick one that you relate to and that you're excited for. Practice singing and dancing. Then - go do your best! That's it. Break a leg |
| Question: Very shy but want to be an actor. How to get into acting? Posted: 11 Nov 2015 05:48 PM PST Start with a beginning acting class - it can help you get more comfortable acting and see what it's about. Acting involves reacting and interacting with others - it's not really something you can practice at home alone first. But there will probably be people like you in a beginning acting class so it might be a good place to start. And if your anxiety is interfering with your ability to do what you want - consider seeking professional help. A therapist can help you address your anxiety issues and develop methods to help you cope with it. That can help you not just with acting but with anything else. Then you can try auditioning for community theater. They often have open auditions that anyone can go to. Look at the website for community theaters in the area - they usually list what shows are coming up and when auditions are. If it helps, maybe start by volunteering backstage or as an user at the theater first and start to get to know the people and the atmosphere at that theater and decide if it's where you want to get more involved. Mainstream movies and TV shows or that type of thing don't have open auditions. For stuff like that you have to be invited to audition, usually through an agent. It really is a business with contracts, unions, legal requirements, marketing, networking and the like. Contrary to popular belief actors are not just "discovered" and given a career. It's more like running a company and you are the product that has to be marketed and sold. And there are a lot of scams and rip offs out there. So for now - just focus on beginning classes, community theater and maybe some therapy. Later (if you want) you can research and learn what is involved in attempting a more professional acting career. Good luck |
