Question: B&w photography using candle light only? Posted: 09 Nov 2015 11:08 AM PST This is for one of my classes, and im having a really hard time thinking of something.. i was going to have a family member hold a handle close to their face while wearing a halloween mask but i couldnt find anythat were kind of cheap since its PAST halloween..Would using a picture of me and my cousin when we were little (she died when we were both 8) be an alright photo of it next to a candle?? i tried using a ouiji board and some candles but it honestly looked odd. I am not trying to steal peoples ideas but I can not think of anything tbh, first assignment that i am COMPLETELY blank..
Question: Advice from photographers? Posted: 09 Nov 2015 10:17 AM PST Your pricing needs to cover all of your expenses on top of making a profit. You must cover your business license, liability insurance, marketing costs, future losses and upgrades, reasonable cost for your time, etc. All on top of the chunk of change that goes to taxes. Will $20 cover all of that while leaving you profit for costs of living and your trip? Sadly, today people are expecting artistic services to be done for less and less. A school my wife works at recently had a photographer take photos of staff and students. Each got a printed 8x10 and a digital version of the photo if I remember correctly. All for $25 (this was the cheapest package). She actually heard people claiming THAT was TOO MUCH! It is sickening to see the lack of respect for someone's work, but this is the reality of today (thanks to phone cameras and everyone thinking they can charge unreasonably low prices as photographers because they have a DSLR and are operating a business illegally). My point is, don't think that lowering your prices will necessarily conger up extra business. You will then require that many more paying patrons to cover the loss of $80 on top of your other expenses. Getting clients requires not only having excellent skills in photography (no one is going to pay you if they think they can do it themselves for free), but superhuman skills in marketing as well. You must market to the right people (those who appreciate quality, not those who are cheap and tend to be more critical), convince them that they should purchase your services. It won't be easy, but it is the reality!
Question: What to get to improve in sports photography? Posted: 09 Nov 2015 09:53 AM PST Been in your shoes. You've got a hobby that costs way more than your budget will allow. You want the best, go with a Canon 300mm f/2.8L for around $6,000. Or just rent it for about $200 for the weekend from lensrentals.com or borrowlenses.com. You won't be able to shoot with these big lenses without a monopod too. The telescope lenses are garbage, avoid them like the plague. They're not sharp, downright awful actually. They don't have the light-gathering capability needed to get fast shutter speeds. They useless pieces of junk. But what if you used a high-end spotting scope? That's actually going to be much better, but not for sports. You won't have the focusing speed required, and so at least 90% of shots will be out of focus. Telescopes are great for stars in the sky, not stars on the playing field. Spotting scopes are actually used quite often, but for whale watching, birding, and other things like that when you don't need to focus quickly, let alone track focus. It's just not going to work. A 75-300 on your Rebel is the equivalent focal length of a 120-480, so you really should be fine with that range. That is, unless you're shooting from the stands. In which case, just forget about it. Get your butt onto the field or leave the camera gear at home. If you take a look at what the pros are using, they've got 300mm and 400mm lenses on 35mm DSLRs, and you're already using a lens stronger than what their using. I would suggest that you get onto the field, keep the 75-300 for now and upgrade your camera body to one that focuses faster, focuses in lower light, and can shoot more frames per second. Your T3 just isn't designed for sports photography. You can use it, of course, but it's whole other ballgame to be using the right gear. Take a look at the 70D. Canon's 7D Mark II is one the best sports/wildlife bodies on the market. When you upgrade to a better body, one of the things is that it'll be able to focus faster AND do it in lower light. Now, if you look at what a Canon T(whatever) can do, it can't focus in light dimmer than f/5.6. So if you added a teleconverter to your 75-300, your T3 wouldn't be able to focus. Upgrading to a 70D or 7D Mark II, and you will gain an extra stop, allowing the camera to focus down to f/8. Then, when you add a teleconverter, you still have good AF performance, even when the light drops.
