| Posted: 24 Nov 2015 12:20 PM PST It's iambic pentameter, as most sonnets, are, but @Rick's explanation makes no sense. The first line does not scan as "how DO i LOVE thee LET me COUNT the WAYS"; nobody talks like that. It scans as "HOW do i LOVE thee...." The first "foot," or pair of syllables, is the opposite of the strict iambic pattern. Metrical poetry does NOT always strictly follow the metrical pattern in every line, and the first line of this poem is a good example of that. The meter is a general overall pattern, but individual lines can vary from it. There are poems by Robert Frost in which not a single line is exactly five occurrences of "da-DUM," but the poems are still considered to be "in iambic pentameter." |

| Question: How is this poem by a friend of mine? How can she make it better? Posted: 24 Nov 2015 07:57 AM PST She wanted to get on answers like me but she doesn't have a cell phone so she's having a problem. So, I offered to put hers up for her. She's 15 too. soul On The Run What do I do in the mean time? Hunger is bright in their lion eyes. It's funny how sometimes their sweet and low, becomes a den of claws and biting jaws, I'm going to go far away. |
