| Question: In Kate's last monologue in Taming of The Shrew....? Posted: 13 Nov 2015 05:19 PM PST I just finished studying Taming of the Shrew in my college Lit class, and Kate's motive in the last monologue is apparently really debated between critics! My professor says that she thinks that Petruchio did indeed "tame" Kate, so she honestly mended her ways, but I personally think that going from abhoring men to complete submission in such a short time is too drastic of a change of tune to be sincere. I think that Kate is smart enough to realize that submitting to Petruchio makes for a whole lot more of a pleasant life than fighting him, so while she may indeed honor Petruchio as her lord, she does so out of self-interest, rather than love and devotion. Just my two cents! I think you could definitely argue it either way... one of the fun things about discussing literature! |
