| Question: I want to be a film director? Posted: 03 Nov 2015 06:45 PM PST Here's the thing - as a human being you will develop and grow as you mature and get older. Your priorities and interests may (or may not) change. The thing to understand is that you're not stagnant - so it's not like if you put everything into a film career and it doesn't work you're doomed and can never have a steady career. Or if you decide to go for a steady career that you can't have film making as a creative outlet. Life doesn't have to be an either-or thing. You love filmmaking - so make films. Start now! Technology makes things much easier. You don't have to be in a big city to do that. When you're ready you can check the internet for contests to submit to if you want. Directors need to know how to build a strong team, they need to be organized, and they need to have a basic understanding of all aspects of filmmaking - so experimenting with doing your own films now can help you igure some of that out. Read and write! Good directors need to know how to tell a story - so try some creative writing or screen writing classes or books. You need to understand how a story is structured and how to translate that into visual images. If that goes well - if you really love the work and seem good at it, then you can investigate film schools for after college. Research and start to learn the business end of things and see how that goes. Film making/directing is an art - but if you want a career of it then it also becomes a business. Good luck. |
