Question: What relation am I to this person ?

Posted: 18 Oct 2014 05:58 PM PDT

On your father's side, her parent is your first cousin, so she is your first cousin once removed.

On your mother's side, her parents and your mother are first cousins, so you two are second cousins.

Lost of people are two relations at once.

Question: What does it say next to the person George about the relation to head of household...i cant make it out?

"servant"??
If so, it doesn't always mean "Butler" or "Footman". I've seen 'servant" on hired hands in Montana who would not know what to do with a silver tea set if their lives depended on it. They could mend fence and herd cattle, though.

Question: My name is Wendy Louise Huggins, I come from Mary (Majorie) Bruces line. Am I a direct descendant?

Posted: 18 Oct 2014 01:23 PM PDT

Marjorie Bruce or Marjorie de Brus (1296 – 2 March 1316) was the eldest daughter of Robert the Bruce, King of Scots by his first wife, Isabella ... (Wikipedia)

So, yes, if you have convincing proof of your line - which is roughly 700 years, and about 21 generations, you are a direct descendant. You're also a direct descendant of Robert the Bruce's parents and grandparents. That's a VERY big "if". Most of us are happy to trace our lines back to people alive in 1850, which is usually 5 - 6 generations.

If you get back before 1800, with rare exception, an alarm bell should go off. If you get to royal blood, unless your last name is Windsor, an alarm bell, three signal flares and a siren big enough to warn coastal dwellers of a tsunami should go off.

If you'd like to see an example of real research, go to

scroll ALL THE WAY DOWN, past the ads, and enter
Surname = Ketcham
Given name = Dixwell
then choose the one from tree I contributed, which is named, cleverly enough, "tedpack".

Question: Nordquist last name origin?

Posted: 18 Oct 2014 09:25 AM PDT

The name Nordquist, purely as a name, isn't English at all; it's very Norwegian.

This doesn't mean that a person with the name Nordquist is Norwegian. If a Norwegian man - a sailor, say - with that name settled in Britain 100 years ago and married an English girl, and their sons married English girls, by now there could be a whole bunch of Nordquists in England who were maybe only 1/16th Norwegian by blood and !00% English in culture and outlook.
