Arts & Humanities: Theater & Acting: “Question: How do I get into a character?” plus 3 more

Question: How do I get into a character?

Posted: 15 Oct 2014 11:01 PM PDT

When I make my own characters I can live inside their minds, I know what they're saying, the way they say it, and the body movements, etc.

But with someone else's character it's hard for me. I don't know why. I'm so worried about how I'm going to sound, if I sound like the character, if I move like him, if I am them. With my own it's like, "Yep, I'm acting just as I've pictured them".

Any advice? Should I maybe start building up the characters like I do my own, make them my own? And how would I do that? Should I find a character I like?

Update : Like, with my own characters, it comes so naturally where I just am them. I'm not focusing on the movements, or the lines, they just come naturally. It's fun. But with characters I haven't created I'm constantly overthinking if I'm moving like them and stuff and I can't get into character. It's not fun.

Question: Is learning to play the cello just so I can play the Pink Panther theme crazy?

No, i think that once you learn how to play the Pink Panther theme, you'll realize how much fun and beauty comes out of having the talent and ability to play such a beautiful instrument, and i personally think it'll make you want to continue on and become a better musician.
That's what happened to me with the violin, and now I'm a professional violinist :) Doesn't get better than string instruments!

Question: What part should I audition for?

Posted: 15 Oct 2014 07:26 PM PDT

In January I'm planning on auditioning for my city's production of the Sound of Music. I'm 14 years old and tall. There is a thirteen year old von trapp girl, which i'm too tall for, and the oldest, who is 16 and I might be too young for. I would love your opinion.

(I would be fine with just a chorus role, but it would be fun to have solos)
